WASHINGTON, DC – Today, the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW), which represents 1.3 million workers in grocery stores, meatpacking plants, and other essential industries across North America, released the following statement after the Senate passed a landmark bill, the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022.
UFCW International President Marc Perrone released the following statement:
“Today, the Senate took a monumental step in delivering for America’s working families, including the essential workers who make up the UFCW. Our hard-working members across the country have been calling for action on these issues since day one of the Biden Administration and, finally, it’s on its way to being delivered.
“The Inflation Reduction Act will put more money back in the pockets of hard-working Americans by bringing inflation down, lowering prescription drug costs, and ensuring that the wealthiest corporations, who make a habit of taking advantage of their workers, start paying their fair share. On top of that, this bill will make historic investments in tackling the climate crisis, the effects of which disproportionately impact working people in this country, including our members, who contend with it not only in their communities but, as essential workers, often have to work through extreme heat and weather.
“The hard-working people who have kept this country running the past two years, should not have to struggle to pay their bills. The Inflation Reduction Act will help, and I urge the House of Representatives to pass it and President Biden to sign it into law as quickly as possible.”
