On July 29, workers at the Planned Parenthood health center in Livonia, Mich., joined UFCW Local 876. This organizing win marks the first Planned Parenthood unit to be represented by UFCW Local 876. The six workers at the health center are employed as medical assistants.
These workers joined our union because they wanted to provide better service to their community while providing for their families. They were also in contact with Planned Parenthood workers in Kalamazoo, who joined UFCW Local 951 in June and were the first Planned Parenthood unit in Michigan to unionize.
In addition to talking with their colleagues in Kalamazoo, the campaign to organize these workers included Zoom and in-person meetings with the workers about the benefits of joining a union.
“Today, we celebrate a monumental victory for reproductive rights and health care access,” said one of the medical assistants at the Planned Parenthood health center in Livonia. “This win is a testament to the relentless dedication and unwavering spirit of our community, who organized, advocated, and fought tirelessly for justice. Together, we have shown that when we stand united, we can achieve incredible things and create a brighter future for all.”
