On Oct. 3, workers at the PetSmart store in Mishawaka, Ind., achieved a historic victory by becoming the first PetSmart store in the county to unionize by joining UFCW Local 700. PetSmart Inc. is a privately held American chain of pet superstores with more than 1,660 locations in North America.
The 28 PetSmart workers, who are employed as groomers and bathers, pet specialists, cashiers, and dog trainers, joined our union because they were concerned about restructuring in the company and the possibility of reductions in benefits. They also wanted a voice in the workplace with the goal of improving PetSmart services for their customers and the animals under their care.
The campaign to organize these workers included multiple meetings with the workers at the store, talking about the benefits of belonging to a union, and building relationships with the workers. Organizers also kept in regular contact with the workers via Zoom and group chats to build solidarity throughout the campaign.
“With this victory, we’ve shown the company that we’re serious about coming together and unionizing for real change in our stores,” said the workers on the PetSmart Union website. “Now, we’re focused on putting our collective voice into action and building strength throughout the country! We can’t wait to see which PetSmart store joins us next in our fight to make PetSmart the company we know it can be.”
“UFCW Local 700 could not be more excited about the workers at PetSmart choosing us as their union,” said UFCW Local 700 President Tracy Bartak. “We look forward to negotiating a first contract for our new PetSmart members. Our pets are part of our family and those who help us care for our pets are essential. Whether you work in food and grocery, as a professional bookseller, a pet trainer or groomer or in other service to our community, UFCW Local 700 is committed to fighting with you for a better life.”
