On Dec. 20, workers at the Oklahoma Policy Institute in Tulsa and Oklahoma City, Okla., joined UFCW Local 1000 for a voice in the workplace. The Oklahoma Policy Institute is a nonpartisan group that analyzes policies in Oklahoma.
The 17 employees joined our union family because they were concerned about job protection and wanted better benefits. They also wanted the ability to voice their ideas, concerns and opinions at work and improve workplace culture.
The campaign to organize this new unit included reaching out to the workers and giving them guidelines about how to form a union. UFCW Local 1000 organizers also showed them how to take ownership of the organizing process, giving them the flexibility and versatility to voice their concerns.
“Unionizing with UFCW Local 1000 has given us a stronger voice in our workplace,” said Oklahoma Policy Institute employee Ryan Starkweather. “As a nonprofit, our goals can be a little different than other workplaces and UFCW allowed us to take ownership of the process. We’re excited to get into negotiations and help make our workplace thrive.”
