Half Price Books Workers in Kentucky Join Local 227

October 6, 2022 Updated: October 13, 2022

On Sept. 23, workers at Half Price Books in east Louisville, Ky., joined UFCW Local 227 for a better life. This organizing win is part of the national Half Price Books Workers United campaign.

Half Price Books workers in east Louisville began organizing in June of this year and filed the necessary paperwork with the National Labor Relations Board to have a union election in late August. The election took place on Sept. 23.

These new members of our union family understand the benefits of unionizing and are looking forward to negotiating their first union contract.

“No relationship lasts without mutual accountability,” said Cally Hazard. “I organized my union at my store because I love my job and I’m committed to making it more sustainable for us.”

“Our workload continues to increase, but staffing levels and our pay have not,” said Grant Cottingham. “Without booksellers, there is no Half Price Books. We are looking forward to bargaining a contract in good faith that reflects our valuable work.”

“I wanted a union for my co-workers and myself to have a say in the business we work so hard for every day,” said Mary Condon. “We deserve a seat at the table, and a place for our ideas not only to be heard, but for us to negotiate their implementation.”

The hard-working booksellers at Half Price Books in Kentucky are the latest bookstore workers from this chain to join the UFCW.  Half Price Books workers in Coon Rapids, Roseville, St. Paul, and St. Louis Park, Minn., are members of UFCW Locals 663 and 1189; Half Price Books workers in Greenwood, Ind., are members of UFCW Local 700; and Half Price Books workers in Niles, Ill., are members of UFCW local 1546.
