General Organizer – Digital Department

Location: Washington DC, near Metro (on-site)

Duration: Full-time position; posting closes when position is filled.

Position Description

The General Organizer encourages union membership to non-union workers by providing information on union benefits and employees rights, to achieve a collective bargaining agreement, and may remain in contact with members through servicing programs.

Duties and Responsibilities

Include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.  This list is not exhaustive and may be supplemented.

  • Represents the International Union and its chartered local unions around the country in structured organizing campaigns or traditional NLRB organizing programs, including but not limited to, the use of the personnel assigned to assist in such programs, probing and starting an organizing program, speaking to individuals and groups, conducting effective house visits to workers, evaluating workers, obtaining the necessary signatures for gaining representation rights, organizing worker committees, holding meetings, composing and writing literature, and evaluating  programs.
  • Under the direction of a supervisor, works closely and collaboratively with local union to implement the UFCW growth plan.  Responds quickly to requests for assistance from the local union or the Region Office regarding any aspect of an organizing campaign, picket line activity, member service and contract negotiation.  Assists local unions with picket line activities, signing up membership, carrying out full membership service programs, including auditing of membership records.
  • Prepares weekly written reports of work activities to their director.  Maintains detailed records of project activities.
  • Regularly inputs and extracts data from a database and other software packages as needed to track organizing programs.
  • Personally provides transportation by automobile to individuals in the course of the job duties.  

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience

Working knowledge of contract enforcement, workers rights, and basic labor laws required campaign experience as a union member, organizer or representative, or in political, legislative or social justice campaigns required. In order to advance from an Organizer in Training to Organizer/General Organizer and finally to an International Representative, the incumbent must have successfully carried out previous job assignments. Relevant work experience and length of service are also considered.

Communication Skills

Must be able to make effective and persuasive speeches or presentations to groups and individuals.  Strong oral and written communication skills are essential.

Computer/Software Skills

Computer literacy, including but not limited to, a working knowledge of computer functionality is required.

Other Knowledge, Skill/Abilities Required

Must be results-oriented and highly organized, with the ability to prioritize projects and activities.  Must have advanced analytical and problem-solving skills.  Must possess to ability to think strategically and exercise a high level of judgment.

Leadership Abilities

Must be able to learn how to effectively mentor and train staff as needed to achieve goals. 

Personal Characteristics

Must possess strong interpersonal skills.  Must be able to work on employment matters with diverse groups as well as the specific issues that affect the target populations.  Requires initiative, honesty, leadership, the ability to motivate people, the ability to learn quickly, a good work ethic and the proven ability to successfully carry out assignments. Commitment to, knowledge of, and interest in the U.S. and Canadian labor movements is also required.

Job Demands

Ability to work under high pressure in a fast-paced work environment, with multiple priorities and critical deadlines is required.  Must be able to engage in frequent travel throughout the U.S., on short notice, for weeks at a time.  Long and sometimes irregular hours, including nights and weekends, are also necessary.

Other Requirements

Valid driver’s license and the ability to drive a car.  In some circumstances, foreign language skills are required; bilingual English/Spanish and other languages is a plus.

Compensation

Salary Range: $68,737 – $85,646
