We are the Union for Albertsons, Tom Thumb, United, and Market Street Workers.
In December 2024, Albertsons announced that they would end the merger agreement with Kroger, which would have merged the two companies and resulted in the sale of hundreds of Albertsons locations to a new buyer. Now that the deal has fallen through, the future is uncertain.
Now, Albertsons is free to find a new buyer if they want, one that could close stores or lay off workers.
In Texas, that means that all Albertsons, Tom Thumb, and Market Street workers will be affected, and without a union, their hours, wages, scheduling, or future success of their store would be decided by their new employer, and nothing is guaranteed.
UFCW, the union for grocery workers, represents 835,000 grocery store workers at major companies all across the country, including many Albertsons locations. For workers in the union, their future is brighter. The things that matter most- like consistent raises, guaranteed hours, and fair schedules are better protected from changes especially with all the uncertainty Albertsons’ future might bring.
Now is the best time for Albertsons, Tom Thumb, and Market Street workers to start a union and protect the wages, benefits, and hours they deserve.
“Being a part of the union means we have more power to stand up for what we deserve, and the more stores that join us, the stronger we are”
Ready to start a union at your Albertsons, Tom Thumb, or Market Street store?
Ready to negotiate together for bigger paychecks, stronger benefits, and better lives? If you are, the steps to joining the UFCW are simple.
“I’ve seen a lot in my time at Albertsons. Restructurings, layoffs, you name it. But now that I’m in the union, I know that my wages, benefits, and protections would be more secure.”
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the benefits of having a union at my store?
With a union contract, you and your co-workers can negotiate for benefits such as consistent raises and schedules, affordable health care, workplace safety standards, and so much more! It also means that in the event your store is affected by the Kroger-Albertsons merger, you may be better protected against changes like decreased wages and hours, or worse schedules.

Now that the merger won’t happen, does that mean my store won’t be sold?
Not necessarily. Now that Albertsons has pulled out of the potential merger with Kroger, they can look for a new buyer if they want. Also under the old deal, they promised not to close any stores as a part of the merger. Albertsons can look for a new buyer or close stores, and without a union contract, workers won’t have the protections they need or the voice they deserve.
For Albertsons workers who are already part of the union, they know that even if their store is sold in the future, they will be able to better protect the pay, benefits, and protections they have now, and negotiate with the new company to make things even better.
That means that now is the best time to take action to start a union at your store. No matter what the future brings, a union contract is the best way to secure the better wages and benefits you deserve today, and the security you might need tomorrow.
My manager said that “nothing will change” now that my store won’t be sold. Is that true?
Managers can make all kinds of promises but the reality is that without a union contract, Albertsons can do what it wants, like choosing to make big changes to the number of stores they operate, the number of workers they may lay off, or the new company they sell to.
Your manager can’t promise that nothing will change in your store, including hours, staffing, pay, and more. The only way to better secure your hours, pay, and job security is to get it in writing. That’s what a union and a union contract is for! By starting a union at your store, you can turn empty promises into real guarantees.
How do I start a union at my store?
By talking to your coworkers and one of our union organizers! We are here to help you make your store a better place to work and answer all your questions. Fill out the form below to get started and connect with one of our organizers.
I’m ready to make my job better. What’s next?
That’s great! We’re ready to help. If you haven’t already, the first step is to connect with an organizer. They’ve got experience working in grocery AND making their stores better with the power of the union. They’re here to listen to you, answer your questions, and help you understand how you can form a union at your store.
Once you and your coworkers agree that starting a union would make your jobs better, you will sign support cards. Signing a support card, or “union authorization card,” is an important step in forming a union at your store. By signing the card, you are saying that you choose the UFCW to be your partner on the job and represent you to bargain for what you deserve.
Once a majority of your coworkers have signed union support cards, we will ask Albertsons to start bargaining with us. If Albertson’s refuses to do so, the cards may also be submitted to the National Labor Relations Board to request a union election. If a majority of your coworkers vote YES at the election, Albertsons will have to recognize your union and start bargaining with you on the most important things at any job- higher pay, greater respect, fairer hours, better benefits, and more.
It’s not until after you’ve negotiated your first contract with the wages, benefits, and protections you deserve, would you pay dues as a union member. And remember- would you ever vote for a contract that leaves you with less than you had before? No way. Having a strong union contract is a great way to put more money in your pocket, not less.
Albertsons, Tom Thumb, and Market Street workers deserve better. And with a union contract, things like yearly raises, guaranteed minimum hours, reliable scheduling, affordable healthcare, and respect on the job are just some of the ways a union can make that possible.
