WASHINGTON, DC – Today, the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW), which represents 1.3 million workers in grocery stores, meatpacking plants, and other essential industries across North America, released the following statement with the NYC Trader Joe’s Wine Shop Organizing Committee.
UFCW and the NYC Trader Joe’s Wine Shop Organizing Committee released the following joint statement:
“Today, with the assistance of the UFCW, the crew members at the New York City Trader Joe’s Wine Shop officially filed an unfair labor practice (ULP) charge against Trader Joe’s.
“In addition to illegally shutting down the store in an effort to union bust, Trader Joe’s also illegally polled store employees and discouraged crew members from supporting the union by saying that supporting the union would be futile.
“By engaging in these unfair labor practices, Trader Joe’s prevented the members of the NYC Wine Shop from exercising their rights to unionize. Their shameful, union-busting tactics were intentionally designed to prevent workers from gaining union representation and were designed to have a chilling effect on any other Trader Joe’s workers – in New York and elsewhere – who were interested in unionizing. Their illegal, unfair actions cannot stand and the NLRB should not allow them to get away with this type of egregious anti-worker behavior.”
