Members of UFCW Local 1189 who work at River Market Co-op in Stillwater, Minn., recently ratified a first union contract that raises wages and improves benefits.
The 37 members, who are employed as cashiers, grocery and produce stockers in the deli, pricing and health and beauty care divisions, joined our union family last May because they were concerned about recent employee firings over minor issues, as well as increased work assignments with no wage increases, and favoritism. These workers wanted a union for job security, a voice on the job, and the ability to speak up without retaliation. The three-year contract addresses those issues and includes starting wage increases, holiday pay, job bidding, an elimination of the pay cap and much more.
“We are thrilled that River Market Co-op employees have decided to join our union family,” said UFCW Local 1189 President Jennifer Christensen. “UFCW members working in co-ops have proven to be strong active participants in our communities and our union.”
