On Thursday, February 24, UFCW held its annual celebration honoring Black History Month. This year’s program theme: Stronger Together provides an opportunity to reflect on the past and recognize the strength and power of our collective efforts and sacrifices.
Speakers included Stacey Abrams, Founder Fair Fight Action, Executive Director of the Southern Economic Advancement Project, and Georgia Political Leader; and Congressman Kweisi Mfume representing Maryland 7th District and Former NAACP National President.
Speakers led the conversation about the pivotal role of essential workers on the heels of challenging times and events in the history of our country. Despite the challenges, unity across movements also brought historic political victories in Georgia and the election of the first African-American woman as Vice-President.
UFCW International President Marc Perrone provided opening remarks, saying “America must be better than our past. The path to a better and more just America is a path to fight for.”
“This year’s theme—‘Stronger Together’—could not be more fitting. The strength of the 1.3 million member UFCW has moved mountains,” says Rep Kweisi Mfume (MD-7) as he thanks UFCW essential workers.
“I stand with the UFCW because we are stronger together. Union means we are united with a purpose, united in action.” said Stacey Abrams as she reflects on the prevalent struggles when fighting for civil and social justice today.
