Access to affordable health care is a right you deserve.
Nothing is scarier than getting sick and not knowing if you can afford to see a doctor, pay the bills, or get the care you need. The UFCW works every day to make sure our members have access to affordable health care through their work.
– Hidi Colquitt, UFCW Local 1996“My UFCW gives us the best healthcare I could ask for. It’s really good and affordable. When one of us gets sick or injured, our bills get covered. So many people who don’t have a union don’t have health insurance. Not us. The UFCW puts our needs first.”
That is why 96 percent of private industry union workers have access to health care and medical care benefits versus 69 percent and 68 percent of non-union workers, respectively. Our contracts include access to high-quality, affordable health care for you and your family that includes everything from regular preventative services to medical care in a health crisis.
Providing medical insurance and sick leave for all workers
Unexpected medical bills remain the number one cause of bankruptcy for American workers, which is why we push to improve our benefits and raise the floor for access to health care for all Americans. We demand that all employers in our industries provide access to good health care, even if they aren’t unionized and we fight to make legislative changes that improve access to health care for every worker in America.
The UFCW has fought for legislation that would lower prescription drug prices and create a public health insurance option as an alternative to for-profit insurance companies, and protect collectively bargained for employment-based health coverage. We also support the passage of the Healthy Families Act, which would require employers to provide workers with a minimum of seven paid sick days a year.
